Head Lifeguard

Work Dates:
Staff Training: June 24th – June 25th, 2017 (Saturday & Sunday)
July 3 – August 25, 2017 (Monday to Friday)

Job Description:
As an STB Head Lifeguard you will lead a team of lifeguards in co-supervising swims on the camp beachfront for groups of campers several times a day for the duration of each five day camp session. Head Lifeguards are responsible for providing an exceptional camp experience for all campers while ensuring a safe and fun environment.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Including but not limited to,

  • Lead a group of lifeguards in professionally supervising several daily swims on a dynamic beachfront setting
  • Explain waterfront rules to large groups of campers and staff members and ensure waterfront rules are adhered to
  • Schedule and coordinate waterfront duties
  • Lead groups of campers in waterfront activities (swimming, boating, water games, etc…)
  • Documentation of any waterfront incidents
  • Ensure maintenance and care for all waterfront equipment (beach toys, boats, lifejackets…) according to STB maintenance schedule
  • Asses the swimming ability of campers for the purpose of assigning swimming boundaries
  • During non-swim times assist other camp staff in carrying out camp activities
  • Monitor the daily progress and general welfare of campers (e.g. following rules, overall health, participation, having fun, etc.)
  • Provide informal swimming lessons to individual campers or small groups of campers
  • Enthusiastically and professionally carry out shared duties such as: night duty, beach duty, etc.
  • Be a full participant in all aspects of camp life
  • Carry out any other task/responsibility as designated by the Camp Director and/or Assistant Camp Director

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Up to date NLS Life Saving Society certification
  • Significant experience lifeguarding
  • Experience running aquatics programs
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to lead a team of co-workers
  • Mature individual who desires to work with children in a dynamic outdoor setting
  • Excellent role model, modeling honesty, integrity and respect
  • Possess enthusiasm, energy, patience and a sense of humour
  • Ability to work with all children, including those who are challenging
  • Team player, ability to work well with a variety of personalities and to give and receive feedback

Assets (not required):

  • NLS Life Saving Society Beachfront certification
  • NLS Life Saving Society Instructors
  • Experience lifeguarding on a beach front
  • Prior experience working with children
  • Active member of school community
